چکیده

Transportation professionals have long recognized the harm of trespassing along railway rights-of-way. However, the non-crossing rail trespassing issue has received less attention than highway-rail grade crossing crashes, despite the fact that nearly 8,800 rail-trespassing crashes occurred on non-crossing rail tracks during the past decade, with a large number of them resulting in fatality. Also, geographic and sociodemographic diversity within the US imply that trespassing crash severity and its correlates may vary across geographic entities or regions. The purpose of this paper is to investigate these issues using rail-trespasser crash data maintained by Federal Railroad Administration (N=8,794 over 2004 to 2013). The unique aspects of the study are the development of a framework that explores correlates of injury severity in crashes, and applies appropriate analysis methods. Specifically, using rigorous spatial modeling methods (Geographically Weighted Regression), the study uncovered spatial variations in correlates between rail-trespassing injury and revealed contributing factors. The factors include personal attributes of individuals, environmental and location attributes, time of crash, and pre-crash behaviors. The results show that non-crossing trespass crashes are generally severe with 52.1% involving a fatality. Pre-crash behaviors were found to be key factors showing significant associations with the probability of rail-trespassing injury, especially lying or sleeping (on or near tracks). Fundamentally, the basic assumption of spatial stationarity in traditional regression models does not fully hold in the situation explored. Correlates of injury severity are found to be non-stationary across space. Therefore, regional considerations in specific situations should guide the implementation of treatments and policies.

Priority Order for Improvement of Intersections using Pedestrian Crash Prediction Model

One of the most important needs of pedestrians is safety at crossing points, especially at intersections. Intersections are important parts of the urban road network because any disruption in them reduces the capacity of the entire network. The main objective of this research is to propose an appropriate method for prioritizing urban intersections with considering the important factors affectin...

Analyzing Motorcycle Crash Pattern and Riders’ Fault Status at a National Level: A Case Study from Iran

Motorcycle crashes constitute a significant proportion of traffic accidents all over the world. The aim of this paper was to examine the motorcycle crash patterns and rider fault status across the provinces of Iran. For this purpose, 6638 motorcycle crashes occurred in Iran through 2009-2012 were used as the analysis data and a two-step clustering approach was adopted as the analysis framework....

An Analysis of The Effects of Installing Pedestrian Countdown Timers on the Incidence of Pedestrian Crashes in the City of Detroit Michigan

In large cities, pedestrians account for 40% to 50% of traffic fatalities. Previous studies based on relatively small samples have concluded that Pedestrian Countdown Timers can reduce pedestrian crashes at signalized intersections. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of Pedestrian Countdown Timer (PCT) on crashes in a large city with a long baseline and relatively patter...

The hazards of pedestrian mobile-phone use when crossing signalized intersections, Iran (2017); an observational study

Background: Distracted walking is a major cause of pedestrian fatalities. Along with the expansion and popularity of mobile phones, their impacts on pedestrian safety, especially when crossing urban intersections have attracted a lot of attention. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of mobile-phone use on pedestrians’ crossing behavior when passing signalized intersections. Ma...

Parametrization of Pedestrian Injuries and its Utilisation in Proving Traffic Accidents Course Using Injury Signatures and Contact Signatures

Background: The paper points out the present limited possibility of using the verbal description of injuries for the needs of experts from the field of road transportation as relevant criminalistics traces, as well as the options of the FORTIS system that creates a new area for a deeper interdisciplinary approach in the field of expert evidence. Further a description of how to create injury si...
